Bike route Mekong Delta Saigon - Can Tho - Soc Trang
Day
1
Saigon – Ngu Hiep – Tan Phong – An Binh - Can Tho

Leave the noisy city of Ho Chi Minh for an hour and a half, driving a private vehicle to Ngu Hiep village. Adjust saddle for a complete experience of the landscape, people, and Mekong Delta' cultures. We cross a small branch to Ngu Hiep Island, ride across fertile soil- fruit orchard farmland. Just about 12km reaching the ferry, which we get on for Tan Phong Island. It's very close to Cai Be township, just a ferry crossing in 10 minutes.  Enjoy a delicious lunch, local dishes at the local home. This incredible ride gives you so much time to experience water transport in rural villages by the Mekong River. Many small Islands in the Mekong River have primary and middle school only, so high school girls and boys travel on ferries to Cai Be. This is why many small boats with long-tailed engines spend much of their time carrying farm products to Cai Be land market and floating market. We will explore vibrant islands and local lifestyle, family workshops, and other exciting things before getting on our support vehicle for an hour driving to Can Tho.

Do check out and enjoy breakfast for the boat trip to the floating market. The boatman will steer his boat slowly through the floating market so that you see all things in action as it's close up so you could take more photos as you can. It's funny that many tiny sampans sell local breakfast; noodle soup, broken rice with porks, and coffee. Then we disembark the boat for the morning ride onwards to Tan Phu Thanh, Hau Giang. Right here, we get on our support van to Cai Tac township for lunch. If the weather were hot, we take a nap at a coffee shop -on the hammock to wait until it's cooler to start the afternoon adventures to Bat Pagoda.

Road Condition

Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta, Vietnam, has rural path network systems, and they had very well-developed by governments. All country back roads are asphalt, concrete paths connecting villages to villages as it's a vast network. The rest are dirt tracks, so do not worry about exploring the Mekong Delta by bicycle, even you are a beginner. Depending on the regions, lowlands, or jungles, and rural villages of each province, our hand-picked routes are the best for your biking trips

Flexible route - The most important key to you

You do not have to ride the exact kilometer distance as it's showing on daily biking of each itinerary. It will be flexible as you want. Even you could choose some longest distance that more than 80km per day if a whole day ride. You could spend more time cycling if you think the biking distance is too short! Or you can enjoy short routes and spend more time taking photos, stopping at villages/ small markets, or the home of locals to find something interesting.

Throughout the Mekong Delta and its rivers with thousand branches! You will ride on various roads; flat trails, paths, rural roads, and country back roads where they are too small for vehicles. There are four Ethnic groups of people lying in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. They are Khmer, Cham, Chinese and Vietnamese. Each province has its own characteristics, economy and local style of living and culture and history. However, the Mekong Delta River has a thousand branches, natural creeks, and canals that small ferry boats are so important in the countryside, and riders have no choice!

Our top cycle tour operator and the pathfinder are Mr Van, nicknamed "Van the man" Each cycling route has to be meticulously well-scouted, investigated, scouted out, and mapped out beforehand by Mr. Van the man. All of our guides are well trained in bike maintenance and navigation and know all routes as they are on their hands. All bike guides can tailor a custom route suitable to your wish, cycling ability, and skills.

Weather

The temperatures in the Mekong delta are all year round, about 25-28°C with only slight variations. The climate of the Mekong River Basin ranges from temperate to tropical. In the Upper Mekong Basin, some of the taller peaks of the Tibetan Plateau are glaciated. Much of this part of the Basin is snow-covered in winter. Melting snow from the Tibetan Plateau feeds the Mekong River’s dry-season flow, especially in the middle reaches. In the relatively lower elevations of the Yunnan province of China, the climate of the Mekong River Basin changes, and the temperature gradually increases.

  • The dry season is from October to the last of April. Farmers make three rice crops per year, so travelers meet them at their homes and see them working on farmlands. Significantly, the dry season is closed to the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, and it makes locals doing more and trying to work hard to get more money. The weather is nice, low temperature and more relaxed than other seasons.

  • The wet season is called the flooded season or the monsoon season. It is the time of year when most of a region's average annual rainfall occurs. Sea level is higher than usual by heavy rains from upstream countries; Tibetan- China, Laos , Thailand, and Cambodia. Provinces in southwest of Mekong Delta have yearly flooded but not so long. It's from last of August to early of Nov. That is the best way to see Mekong Delta on back roads by bicycle.

In general, the preferred travel time is the dry season. But even during the rainy season from May to October is also a perfect time to travel by bicycle of very short rains. The rain usually comes in short, heavy showers, mainly in the afternoon, and only lasts for an hour. Only a few days a year, the temperature is below 20°C. It usually takes around one hour, then gone, and sunshine turns back to normal.

It has been the best tour that we have done whilst in Vietnam. The guides were great! Very knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. The overall, trip was challenging but we felt extremely satisfied when we had finished. We would like to say a big thank you to our tour guides! We feel lucky to have had such an amazing time and to have seen the Vietnam that is rarely seen by many tourists. 02 - 03 - 04 May, 2018

Jack Richards …

We used this tour as a way to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Soc Trang to take the Superdong ferry to the Con Dao islands. It was the low season, so it was just our family of four. The tour was exactly as advertised: we rode almost exclusively on back roads with no cars and trucks, saw the beauty of rural Vietnam, and caught glimpses of what rural life is like. Our guide, Cong, was excellent. He adapted our trip perfectly when one of our kids got sick on the trip and he was happy to let our youngest son set the pace. Cong was endlessly helpful. He even helped us to plan how to get back to Can Tho after our stay on Con Dao, and he was always a wealth of information. The tour is expensive, even by North American standards, but the organization, the level of customization, and the ability to feel confident that you will have a great experience makes it worth the price. 28 - 29 - 30 June 2019

We loved the trip! We appreciated the flexibility of the company and Mr Cong - from buying a new bike for our younger son when he was too small for the regular bikes, to dealing with our older son when he got sick during the trip. The back road trails were so much fun to ride along and we learned a lot about life in the Mekong Delta. Cong was Loc made us feel that everything was taken care of and we didn't need to worry about anything. 28 - 29 - 30 June 2019
