Mu Cang Chai, nestled in the mountainous province of Yen Bai in northwest Vietnam, is a destination of stunning beauty, globally renowned for its terraced rice fields carved into the mountainside. Classified as a national heritage site, these lush, sculpted hillsides transform into a golden ocean during the harvest season, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle. This region is also a highlight of the Northwest Vietnam Cycling Loops, a haven for adventure cyclists riding gravel or all-terrain bikes. The dramatic landscapes—towering limestone peaks, cascading rice terraces, remote valleys, and rugged highland passes—present some of the most challenging and rewarding cycling routes in Southeast Asia. Destinations such as: Sapa, Huynh Nhai, Tuan Giao, Mu Cang Chai, and Moc Chau connect to form an unforgettable loop, offering cyclists both raw natural beauty and rich cultural encounters.
Meet in Hanoi, where your guide will provide a trip briefing before a full-day guided exploration of the city. In the morning, visit key landmarks such as the former French Colonial Palace and Quan Thanh Temple, followed by a short walk with scenic views over West Lake. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in town.
In the afternoon, continue to the Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo Prison, and conclude with a visit to the National History Museum. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Water Puppet Show and dinner before boarding the overnight train to Lao Cai. Your guide will accompany you throughout the entire journey.
If you're arriving in Hanoi today: Please share your detailed flight information with us. We’ll arrange an airport pickup from Noi Bai International Airport and transfer you to Hanoi City. You can then join the group in the afternoon or evening, depending on your arrival time.
The train arrives in Lao Cai in the early morning. Meet your drivers and begin the scenic uphill transfer along winding mountain roads to Sapa. Enjoy breathtaking views of lush rice terraces and deep valleys along the way.
Upon arrival in Sapa, have breakfast at the hotel and leave your luggage at the reception. Then set off to explore the stunning landscapes of mountains, rice paddies, and valleys as you cycle through the villages of Lao Chai, Ta Van, and Su Pan. Along the route, you'll discover the unique cultures of the Black Hmong, Red Dzay, and Tay ethnic groups.
Stop for a delicious local lunch. In the afternoon, continue your journey into the heart of Red Dao territory, visiting traditional villages and learning about their daily life. The day ride concludes in Ban Ho village, from where you’ll return to Sapa by vehicle.
After breakfast, we leave Sapa town by vehicle and begin our cycling adventure on smooth, undulating roads that wind through lush hill farms. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking mountain views and conquer a few small hills as we pass the scenic Silver Waterfalls and arrive at the famed Sapa Heaven Gate. From here, take in the spectacular natural beauty of Fansipan Peak and the dramatic mountain passes of the Hoang Lien Son Range, the highest in Northern Vietnam.
We then enjoy a thrilling descent along winding roads to Tram Ton Pass, continuing onward to Binh Lu. From here, we go off-road, cycling along small gravel paths through charming tribal hamlets inhabited by the Thai ethnic group. This stretch offers magnificent views of jungle-clad hills and rolling terrain dotted with plum orchards and remote villages, with lunch en route.
After about 13 km of rugged trails, we rejoin National Road 32, cycling through a landscape of green farmland and mountain scenery with mostly downhill gradients toward Tan Uyen. We continue on smaller backroads, skirting the mountain range, and delve deeper into the lives of the Thai and Mong tribes, riding past lush rice terraces and traditional homes. We conclude today’s ride at a vibrant rural market before transferring to Than Uyen for the night.
After a hearty breakfast, we bid farewell to our hotel and hop on our bikes to begin an unforgettable day. The journey starts with a scenic ride across rice fields framed by towering mountains. We pass through a quiet town before turning onto small, hilly backroads that wind through hillside villages, offering stunning panoramic views along the way.
Our route then descends into lush valleys and transitions onto a dirt road leading to Ban Chat Reservoir. Here, we embark on a scenic 2-hour boat trip across the tranquil lake—a unique opportunity to witness the everyday life of tribal communities living along the lake’s banks.
Once the boat journey ends, we continue cycling through remote ethnic villages nestled on the mountain slopes and small fishing hamlets dotting the lakeshore. Upon reaching Highway QL279, we transfer by vehicle to Huynh Nhai for a well-deserved lunch. The morning ride covers approximately 29 kilometers.
In the afternoon, we pedal through Huynh Nhai town and its outskirts, gliding along mostly flat roads that cut through vibrant rice paddies. The terrain then shifts as we enter the jungle, climbing gently on winding roads with beautiful views of valleys and remote villages.
A coffee break awaits at a small local market before we enjoy an exhilarating 12-kilometer downhill ride along the river into the town of Tuan Giao—an exciting and scenic conclusion to an adventurous day.
Pha Din Pass is 30 km with 1.680mm above the sea level. It had become a legend of Dien Bien Phu Victory. It was the small trails and Viet Minh (the fathers and mothers of the Viet Cong) made up of the small road to supply the weapons and food. It was the most challenging way to use human power to pull artillery from Som La Dien Bien Phu. It was the only main and shortest route to support Viet Minh to defeat the French in Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
We cycle from the hotel, undulate 5 km through tiny towns along the river, and then challenge the Pha Din, which offers most of Vietnam's most incredible mountain landscapes. Venture through the spectacular karst mountains to the peak, view the scenery, and look over the most outstanding natural beauty. Take a ride descent in Binh Thuan. There are two roads between the middle part of the mountain top, and one is 13 km on a new road, while the old road is a well-maintained, smaller road with a similar distance, but without traffic at all. We cycle uphill for about 13 km and enjoy cycling downhill for 17 km.
You can choose which route to challenge, and we will be with you. The afternoon' ride is beautiful as it's more leisurely than in the morning adventures. The ride takes us through Black Thai hill tribes and green valleys, buffalos on farms and verdant fields of farm products. We will be back on the vehicle transfer to Son La city in the late afternoon.
After breakfast, enjoy a short transfer to a quiet rural village where the morning ride begins. The route follows National Road 106, winding through peaceful countryside dotted with small towns, lush terraced rice fields, mountain backdrops, and gentle rivers.
A key highlight of the morning is the climb over Cao Pha Pass, a small but rewarding challenge. After reaching the summit, enjoy a scenic descent through fertile farmland and valleys inhabited by H’mong and Thai ethnic communities. Pass through the untouched village of Muong Bu, where traditional ways of life remain intact.Continue to Muong La township and pause for a local lunch by the serene Da River.
In the afternoon, ride along the spectacular and little-traveled Road 109. This quiet mountain road takes you past stilt houses nestled at the foot of forested hills and across sweeping landscapes of terraced rice fields. The ride offers countless photo opportunities as you cruise alongside a tranquil reservoir.
Take a refreshing coffee break at the local Hot Springs, or relax your legs with a short soak before completing the final 13 km. This last stretch winds through rural farmland and gradually climbs through forested paths and grassy hills before descending into the magnificent rice terraces of Mu Cang Chai. Arrive at the Ecolodge in the late afternoon.
Nestled on a small hill overlooking a stunning valley, Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge offers panoramic views of breathtaking terraced rice fields and nearby tribal villages. Rise early to savor the peaceful morning, take in the valley’s majestic natural beauty, and prepare to explore the scenic wonders of Khau Pha Pass and Tu Le—homeland to the Thai, Mong, and Dao ethnic groups.
After a hearty breakfast, begin your cycling journey by gently undulating through small hills for about 6 km to meet National Road 32. Turning right, continue climbing steadily for another 4 km to reach the top of Khau Pha Pass. Spanning 30 km, this is the longest and most rugged mountain pass on Road 32, connecting Van Chan District with Mu Cang Chai District. The summit rewards you with sweeping views of the mountainous valleys—perfect for stunning photographs.
From the pass, enjoy an exhilarating 30 km descent—the longest continuous downhill of the trip—followed by rolling terrain that trends downward all the way to Nghia Lo.
Take your time along the way with frequent stops to soak in the natural beauty, especially in Tu Le Commune (Van Chan District), surrounded by forested peaks and home to vibrant communities of Thai, Mong, and Dao people. Tu Le is renowned for its delicious sticky rice, a must-try local specialty.
Continue on to the picturesque villages of Ma Tun and Nam Bung, followed by the winding road through the spectacular Ban Hoi Valley, before reaching the town of Nghia Lo, where the day’s adventure concludes.
Today's journey takes you deep into Vietnam's northwest, through remote hamlets, jungle-covered hillsides, and tiny mountain towns along scenic Road 112. The highlight of the day is the ride through Ta Xua Nature Reserve—renowned for its dramatic slopes and ever-changing mountain weather.
The morning begins with a gentle 30 km ride along rolling hills, rice paddies, quiet rural farms, and meandering rivers. This section offers a relaxing start and a chance to soak in the countryside atmosphere before lunch at a local stop.
In the afternoon, prepare for a more demanding but rewarding stretch as you climb into the forested mountains of Ta Xua. This area is vital for tropical forest conservation, sheltering unique flora and fauna in its cool, misty climate. Expect rapid weather changes—sunshine, fog, cloud cover, and occasional light rain all in one day—as clouds drift dramatically along the mountain ridges.
After reaching the pass, you’ll descend through verdant rural landscapes on a spectacularly winding road that leads to Bac Yen, a quiet town nestled in the hills. The scenery, fresh air, and sense of isolation make this one of the most unforgettable rides of the journey.
Moc Chau Plateau, located in Son La Province, is known for its scenic landscapes of rolling hills, tea plantations, plum orchards, and a patchwork of farmland. While the Kinh people make up around 35% of the population, the region is predominantly home to ethnic minorities, including the Thai, H’mong, Kho Mu, Dao, and Tay—each contributing to the area’s rich cultural tapestry.
Today’s cycling journey begins directly from our hotel. We ride out of town, passing through peaceful rural settlements and into the open countryside. The route winds through agricultural lands and offers a close-up view of daily life along the Tac River, where locals live in modest homes and tend to their fields.
After lunch, we cross the Da River by ferry and continue cycling toward the Moc Chau Plateau. The afternoon ride offers stunning views of terraced tea plantations that stretch along undulating hillsides. We’ll visit a local tea village to witness each step of traditional tea processing, and gain insight into H’mong culture as we interact with villagers. We end the day in Moc Chau and settle in for an overnight stay amidst the plateau’s tranquil beauty.
After an early breakfast, we begin cycling directly from the hotel, pedaling a few kilometers through the town before veering onto a quiet country road. Our route winds through the scenic countryside, passing tea plantations, flower fields, and fruit orchards. We then connect with the old National Road 6, which we follow for the remainder of the day.
This historic route takes us through peaceful rural towns, verdant valleys, and rolling green hills blanketed in lush vegetation. The Moc Chau Plateau, known for its fertile soil and cool climate, is ideal for cultivating tea, plums, avocados, strawberries, and various vegetables. The region also boasts colorful flower gardens and is dotted with charming ethnic minority villages.
Lunch will be enjoyed at a local eatery in a small town along the way. The ride offers a captivating experience for nature lovers, featuring winding "snake roads" and expansive highland scenery. With light traffic and well-maintained roads, our support vehicle can easily follow the group and is always available. Our cycling journey ends at Chien Yen village, where we board the vehicle for a 4-hour transfer to Hanoi, arriving in the late afternoon.
Ha Noi is Vietnam's capital city and political centre. The city offers examples of both contemporary and classical architecture, especially the Old Quarter of Ha Noi. After breakfast, spend your time shopping until a transfer takes you to Noi Bai airport to catch your international flight home.
