Cycling Ho Chi Minh Trails Vietnam: Ha Noi to Hoi An

IMPORTANT NOTE

  1. Most sections of the historic Ho Chi Minh Trails have long since disappeared, replaced by modern highways crowded with fast-moving, heavy traffic. However, fragments of these legendary routes still endure as quiet back roads, offering a far more peaceful and authentic riding experience—and it is along these scenic, paved lanes that we will journey.

  2. We deliberately avoid cycling on busy highways, as they are not only hazardous but also lack the charm and cultural richness of the countryside. Instead of enduring noise, dust, and exhaust fumes from trucks and buses, you will enjoy fresh air, tranquil surroundings, and captivating landscapes.

  3. Our route is thoughtfully designed to immerse you in the everyday life of local communities. You’ll pass through charming villages, rural regions, and historically significant areas closely tied to the Vietnam War—especially those connected to the iconic Ho Chi Minh Trail during its wartime era.

Embark on an unforgettable cycling adventure from Hanoi to Hoi An, tracing a spectacular route through Vietnam’s most captivating landscapes and historic corridors. Follow sections of the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail along the southwestern frontier near the Laos border, crossing the storied 17th parallel.

Begin in Hanoi and ride toward the serene valleys of Mai Chau, where stilt houses and lush rice paddies set a tranquil tone. Continue through the scenic reserves of Pu Luong Nature Reserve and the quiet countryside of Ngoc Lac and Vinh. As the landscape grows more dramatic, cycle into Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park, famed for its spectacular limestone caves—perfect for a rewarding rest day.

Ride on through historic routes to Khe Sanh and the remote highlands of A Luoi, before descending to Hue, rich with imperial heritage. The final stretch follows the stunning coastline to Hoi An, where lantern-lit streets and riverside charm await. Unwind for a few days in this timeless town, reflecting on an extraordinary journey—an inspiring blend of culture, history, and breathtaking scenery.

Today's journey is shorter in distance but rich in history, offering a deeper understanding of Vietnam's wartime legacy. Our route follows the historic 17th Parallel, once the dividing line between North and South Vietnam, with visits to several iconic landmarks from the Vietnam War.

At 7:30 AM, we depart by shuttle for a scenic 2.5-hour transfer to the Vinh Moc Tunnels, an extraordinary underground village where local residents lived and survived during the war. We then continue to the Hien Luong Bridge and its museum, a powerful symbol of Vietnam's former division. After exploring these historic sites, we'll enjoy lunch in Dong Ha Town before preparing for the afternoon cycling adventure to Khe Sanh.

Leaving the outskirts of Dong Ha, we ride along quiet paved roads through lush rice paddies, tranquil lakes, and peaceful countryside. The route gradually climbs into the highlands, rolling over gentle hills and winding deeper into the forest. Along the way, we'll visit Tan So Citadel (also known as Son Phong Tan So), a significant historical site in Cam Lo District. Hidden in Doc Kinh Village, Cam Chinh Commune, Quang Tri Province, the citadel served as the secret military headquarters and "Resistance Capital" of the Nguyen Dynasty during the late 19th century. It was here that King Ham Nghi and the royal regent Ton That Thuyet led the Can Vuong resistance movement against French colonial rule.
From there, we continue cycling to Cam Phu, where our support vehicle will be waiting for the final transfer to Khe Sanh, bringing an inspiring day of history and countryside riding to a close.

We begin our day with a visit to Ta Con Airport, also known as the Khe Sanh Combat Base, where fascinating war relics are preserved and open for visitors. From there, a support shuttle takes us to Dakrong Bridge, a symbolic friendship bridge built by Cuban engineers.

Our ride truly begins as we pedal into spectacular scenery. In the morning, we follow Highway QL14, part of the new Ho Chi Minh Highway, a gently undulating route that winds alongside the Dakrong River. The road rises and falls through breathtaking mountain landscapes, with lush tropical jungle and peaceful riverside stretches accompanying us along the way.

After about 45 km of riding, we pause for lunch in a small local town. In the afternoon, we cross the river and venture onto a quieter paved route—the Old Ho Chi Minh Trail—which runs parallel to the main highway. Though only around 15 km long, this section offers a truly memorable ride, passing stilt houses, small ethnic minority villages, and verdant hillsides.

Eventually, the trail rejoins the main highway, and we continue cycling over rolling mountain terrain, picking up speed as we approach Pe Ke Pass. From there, we descend into a picturesque valley as we enter A Luoi District, before following gently undulating roads to our hotel, where we can relax after a rewarding day on the road.
