Cycling Northeast Vietnam - Explore Ethnic Mountain Villages

Leave Hanoi early in the morning and enjoy a comfortable 3-hour transfer from the bustling capital to the peaceful province of Bac Kan. Upon arrival, savor a traditional local lunch in town, offering your first taste of Northern Vietnam’s warm hospitality and regional cuisine.

In the afternoon, your cycling adventure begins. Leaving the main road behind, you'll follow quiet country lanes through a breathtaking valley of terraced rice fields, fertile farmland, and picturesque riverside villages. This is the heartland of the Tay, Nung, and Thai ethnic minorities, whose traditional villages create a cultural landscape as captivating as the natural scenery.

The ride covers approximately 34 kilometers of gently undulating terrain, with a mix of rolling hills, scenic valleys, and the occasional challenging climb as we start climbing up the northern mountain region with an elevation of 438 m. The quiet roads provide an enjoyable and relaxed ride through one of Vietnam’s most remote and beautiful regions.

From Cho Don, a one-hour transfer by support vehicle takes you to Ba Be Lake, one of Vietnam’s most spectacular natural reserves. Upon arrival, check in to a welcoming local homestay near the lake and unwind amidst tranquil waters and dramatic limestone mountains—the perfect setting to conclude an inspiring first day.

Start your day with a hearty breakfast and a cup of freshly brewed Vietnamese coffee while soaking in the peaceful lakeside views of the countryside. We then embark on a scenic three-hour boat cruise along the Nang River, travelling north across Ba Be Lake as we discover the region's rich flora and fauna.

Our journey brings us to a quiet village nestled along the riverbank, where we set off on a forest trek to the magnificent Dau Dang Waterfall. After taking time to enjoy the refreshing surroundings, we continue by boat to Puong Cave, a spectacular natural tunnel carved through a limestone mountain, renowned for its dramatic rock formations and thriving bat colonies.

Following the boat ride, we enjoy lunch before preparing for the afternoon cycling adventure. Setting off from Bac Ngoi Village, we ride through the rural mountain landscape, passing the spectacular Hua Ma Cave, famous for its soaring chambers adorned with thousands of stalactites and stalagmites. The route climbs approximately 7.5 km to an elevation of 812 metres, winding through small villages and lush fruit orchards before a rewarding descent into Cho Ra. From Cho Ra, a support vehicle transfers us back to the hotel, where a warm dinner with the group awaits.

Today's ride takes us beyond the tranquil shores of Ba Be Lake and into one of northern Vietnam's most remote and authentic regions. After a short morning transfer to the outskirts of Cho Ra, we begin cycling on quiet paved roads that weave through peaceful farming communities. The first few kilometers are mostly flat, allowing us to settle into the rhythm of the day before a series of gentle climbs and rewarding descents lead us deeper into the countryside.

As the route unfolds, rolling hills replace the lakeside landscape, revealing lush farmland, traditional stilt houses, and picturesque valleys framed by forested mountains. Well-maintained roads meander through remote villages where daily life continues at an unhurried pace, offering countless opportunities to experience the rich cultural heritage of the region. Throughout the ride, expansive rice terraces blanket the hillsides, creating a stunning patchwork of greens that changes with every bend in the road.

The final stretch features a gradual climb before we reach National Highway QL 34 in a quiet rural village, marking the end of today's cycling. From here, we board our support vehicle for approximately one hour, arriving in the welcoming mountain town of Bao Lac.

Depart your hotel after a flavorful local breakfast, setting out on a scenic cycling journey along winding hillside backroads. Ride through remote,  villages tucked into a dramatic mountain backdrop, where you’ll encounter authentic hill tribe communities living peacefully along the rugged frontier near the Chinese border.

Prepare for the iconic climbs of Me Pja and Khau Coc Cha Pass, celebrated for their serpentine paved roads and awe-inspiring highland vistas. These challenging yet rewarding ascents offer sweeping views before leading you into a gentle descent through the lush Xuan Truong Valley, where panoramic mountain scenery and vivid terraced rice fields unfold at every turn.

Continue the day over the winding Ta Nenh Pass, cycling through untouched ethnic hamlets adorned with traditional stilt houses, offering a glimpse into a timeless rural lifestyle. Then enjoy a thrilling downhill ride into the charming valley, where we continue for a further 5 km to the hotel

After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll set off for a shuttle to outside of Pac Bo with a stop at  a historic Pac Po Village, just 3 kilometers from the Chinese border. Pick up our bike, and cycle along a quiet paved road running parallel to the border, winding past layered rice terraces, small ethnic villages, lively local markets, and tranquil valleys that feel far removed from modern life.

As the journey unfolds, we venture deeper into remote countryside, where dramatic landscapes open up at every turn. Along the way, there are plenty of chances to meet local people and witness daily rural life—farmers guiding water buffalo through the fields and tending a patchwork of crops. We then cross the gentle Quay Son River, passing through peaceful hamlets tucked along the hillsides and riverbanks. Our day concludes in the breathtaking setting of Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of Vietnam’s most picturesque natural wonders.

The early morning brings a quiet magic to Ban Gioc Falls, one of Vietnam's most spectacular waterfalls. Mist rises gently from the cascading water as the first light filters through the limestone karst peaks, casting a soft glow across the landscape. It's the perfect time for a peaceful walk to the falls, when the area is still free from crowds and the air is fresh and cool.

Early morning is also the busiest time for local traders from both Vietnam and China. On bamboo rafts and small wooden boats, they quietly cross the river, exchanging goods in an informal cross-border trade that has continued for generations.

After soaking in the beauty of the falls, we'll take a 30-minute shuttle transfer to a rural market, where we begin today's cycling adventure. The route leads through remote ethnic minority villages, rolling hills, lush rainforest, and emerald rice terraces. We'll tackle a series of gentle climbs and exhilarating descents as the road winds through conical limestone mountains, with plenty of opportunities to stop at scenic viewpoints and admire the dramatic landscapes. A picnic lunch will be served en route.

In the afternoon, we continue cycling through broad, fertile valleys, expansive rice terraces, and traditional stilt-house villages. The quiet roads weave between towering limestone formations and forested mountains, revealing panoramic views of northern Vietnam's unspoiled countryside. The final descent into Quang Uyen Town is smooth, fast, where we take a transfer by shuttle for approximately 1.5 hours to That Khe.

After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll depart from That Khe Town and transfer to the top of the mountain pass. From there, we’ll set off along winding roads that rise and fall through lush mountain forests. The route reveals ever-changing landscapes—dramatic vistas, quiet hamlets, and vibrant local markets—offering an authentic glimpse into rural life.

Today journey offers breathtaking scenery with a rewarding sense of adventure. While cycling the entire distance would be too ambitious, your guide will thoughtfully tailor the route to ensure a ride that is both fulfilling and comfortably achievable, and fully support vehicles.

Today’s ride is relatively relaxed, featuring approximately 33 km of downhill, 10 km of gently rolling and nearly flat terrain, with the remainder consisting of climbs over two small hills. In the morning, we’ll cycle along DT226 Road before heading off-road in the afternoon.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in the picturesque Bac Son Valley. After settling into your homestay, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at a leisurely pace—perhaps take a walk through the village, meeting local residents. End the day by watching the sunset and savoring a delicious home-cooked dinner with your hosts.

Start your final day early and experience the peaceful rhythm of village life as the sun rises over Bac Son Valley. This is a wonderful opportunity to observe the daily routines of the local ethnic communities and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere before the day begins. After breakfast, visit traditional brick-making and Yin-Yang roof tile workshops, where artisans continue age-old crafts that have shaped the distinctive stilt houses of the region for generations.

Your farewell ride follows quiet village lanes through some of Bac Son's most picturesque countryside. Cycle past lush fruit orchards, emerald rice paddies, and charming rural hamlets while taking in the spectacular mountain scenery one last time. Along the way, you'll gain further insight into the traditions, culture, and everyday life of the local ethnic communities.

The cycling concludes as you reach National Highway QL1B, where your support vehicle awaits. Enjoy a well-deserved lunch at a local restaurant before beginning the comfortable drive back to Hanoi, reflecting on the unforgettable landscapes and cultural experiences of northern Vietnam.
